Rome (Italy). On 13 January 2024 in Rome, the School of Formation for Social and Political Commitment ‘Custodians of the Future’ opens, promoted by the United Dioceses of Porto-Santa Rufina and Civitavecchia-Tarquinia in collaboration with the Pontifical Faculty of the Science of Education «Auxilium».
The two-year course of studies, aimed particularly at young people, proposes paths of active citizenship educated in the values of the Social Doctrine of the Church, with the aim of accompanying and directing young people to awareness, responsibility, and shared participation in social and political life.
The opening day at the headquarters of the Pontifical Faculty of the Science of Education «Auxilium» in Via Cremolino 141, is open to all.
Msgr. Gianrico Ruzza, Diocesan Bishop, and Sister Piera Ruffinatto, Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, Dean of the Faculty, will introduce the lectio magistralis of Fr. Luigi Ciotti, founder of the “Abele Group” and of “Free against mafias”. This will be followed by the introductory presentation by the historian Tiziano Torresi, one of the leading experts in the Camaldoli Code and a scholar of Catholicism in the history of the Italian Republic.
In the afternoon, pastoral reflections will continue through a round table that will have as protagonists Domenico Barbera and Vincenzo Mannino, Directors of the Social Ministry Offices and works of two Dioceses.
The School ‘Custodians of the Future’ is developed in monthly seminars until July, with online meetings also proposed. Structured in two years, in 2024, the program proposes the theme “Knowing the Social Doctrine of the Church”; while the second year, in 2025, the theme will be “New challenges and prospects of commitment for Christians in society”.
Among the Professsors are: Fr. Luigi Ciotti, Tiziano Torresi, Enrico Giovannini, Luciano Moia, Andrea Montanino, Salvatore Monni, Giovanni Moro, and Sister Linda Pocher, FMA, Professor at the Auxilium Faculty.
“Bishop Gianrico Ruzza explains that the course of study intends to promote formation for socio-political engagement, for a new active citizenship, a proactive attitude towards the social world, in order to affirm the values that are indispensable. But above all, it aspires to give us back the taste, joy, and beauty of participation, of feeling involved, and of taking care of the Other, of the Country, and of Creation. We will talk about commitment, politics, solidarity, closeness, proximity, rights, participation, economy, choices for the future, sustainability. This is because politics is not the art of compromise, but the desire to use heart, face, and hands for a better society.”
Open preferably to young people aged between 19 and 35, participation requires the secondary school diploma. Those who do not have access or are not in the age group indicated, but wish to deepen their knowledge of the topics offered, can access it as auditors. For the first, after the preparation of a final paper and presence at 2/3 of the meetings, the plan is to issue formation credits; for auditors, a certificate of attendance.
