Khartoum (Sudan). On the eve of 5 August 2024, anniversary of the foundation of the Institute, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians joyfully communicate the evacuation of the Sisters and the community of Mary Help of Christians in Dar Mariam, of Mary Help of Christians Preprovince (AES). They have been trapped in Khartoum for a year and four months
On Sunday 4 August, the group composed of five Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a Salesian priest of Don Bosco, and twenty citizens from the south Sudan was successfully evacuated by the Sudan armed forces.
The FMA community in Khartoum has been trapped for a year and four months in an area under the control of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), but quickly surrounded by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. Their house is part of an educational complex that includes a kindergarten and a primary school, which has hosted dozens of people from the area, Muslims and Christians, in search of refuge once the conflict broke out.
During these months, the school’s well provided the refugees with water, while soldiers from the nearby Sudan Armed Corps took care of the group when necessary and possible, with medical care, food, and solar power.
The house was bombed twice and the community suffered a lot. Due to the fighting, they were forced to stay inside the complex for several months.
After an evacuation attempt by the International Committee of the Red Cross that was hit by firearms in December 2023, and after a year and four months of tension under the bombardments and shooting, the group was finally rescued on 4 August.
The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians express their gratitude to the Sudanese Armed Forces for the successful evacuation.
The Institute also thanks the Community of Sant’Egidio for the effort made to resolve the situation and all those who have supported in various ways the Sisters and the community of Dar Mariam during these difficult months. On 11 July 2024, it organized the press conference “Sudan: Stop the humanitarian catastrophe” in order to turn the spotlight on this emergency forgotten by many.
May Mary Help of Christians continue to protect and bring comfort to those who are in this and other conflicts, and to intercede for peace through the prayer of many.
