Rome (Italy). February 16, 2025 is the 142nd anniversary of the birth of Blessed Maria Troncatti missionary Daughter of Mary Help of Christians born in Córteno Golgi, in the province of Brescia, Italy, on 16 February 1883 and died in Sucúa, Ecuador, on 25 August 1969.

A few days after the official opening of the Triennial in preparation for the 150th anniversary of the first missionary departure of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians –  25 November 2024 – the Holy Father  authorized the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the Decree concerning the miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Sister Maria Troncatti. The Superior General and her Council, during the winter plenary session, started a reflection and a series of activities to prepare ourselves to live the event of the Canonization as a precious gift for the Institute, for the young people, for the Church, for the world.

8 January at Fatima, in Portugal, In the context of the Triennial Verifica of the CIME Interprovincial Conference for Europe and the Middle East, Mother Chiara Cazzuola made known the image and slogan that will accompany the journey in preparation for the Canonization of Blessed Maria Troncatti.

In the Choral Circular, Mother and the Councilors, in connection with the Triennial in preparation for the 150th anniversary of the first FMA missionary departure, emphasize, “The slogan chosen, It is time to revive the fire, commits us to revive it together, rediscovering the missionary passion of each baptized person and strongly embodied by Sister Maria Troncatti: mother, missionary, artisan of peace and reconciliation,” projects us as “outgoing missionary communities” to proclaim to all “the gift of holiness with a missionary face” (Circ. 1045).

For this reason, starting from the slogan, the liturgical spiritual historical commission, constituted in view of the canonization, has elaborated an itinerary to know better the figure of the Blessed, her message, and her current situation. Each month, a video and an in-depth discussion paper will be presented on a specific theme.

The family and the vocational choice

In the first stage of this itinerary, we try to answer questions: Who is Sister Maria Troncatti? Where does she come from? How and where was the personality of the future Mother, Missionary, Artisan of Peace and Reconciliation formed?

On the occasion of her birth, a first video is proposed that gathers images of Corteno Golgi (Brescia), the village of Val Camonica where she was born, to retrace the first 21 years of her life, meet her family, the history of her vocation, and some difficulties she had to face.

A module is also offered with a verse from Sacred Scripture, a passage from the biography of Sister Maria, some questions for reflection, a prayer, and a letter to family members.

A special stage of this journey will be the 5th Thursday of the Auxilium, which will take place on 6 March 2025. In this online meeting, Mother Yvonne Reungoat, Superior General emerita, – during whose government Sister Troncatti was declared Venerable (8 November 2008) and Blessed (2012) – will present “Sister Maria Troncatti, artisan of reconciliation and peace”.

The next stages of the itinerary – which will be proposed on the 25th of each month starting in March, to remember the date of the birth to heaven and the liturgical memory of Blessed Sister Maria Troncatti –  will present interviews with witnesses who directly or indirectly have known and experienced the motherhood of “Madrecita buena”, the physical and spiritual care of the missionary and “doctora”, the commitment to the promotion of the Shuar and for peaceful coexistence with the settlers of the artisan of peace and reconciliation.

The material is offered to be developed, expanded, and adapted to the contexts to promote knowledge of the figure of Sister Maria Troncatti in the Educating Communities, among young people, in the local Church, and in the territory of belonging.
