Vellore (India). On 10 September 2024, the Auxilium College of Vellore, of St. Thomas Apostle Province (INM) organized the Mega SeedBall Fiesta 2024 with the theme Auxilium: Eco 6G: Go Green, Grow Green, Glow Green. The event aimed to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices, in particular by creating 5,000 “seed bombs”.

Seed balls are balls made of clay soil mixed with a variety of seeds (field flowers, fruit trees, herbs, vegetables). Thrown in uncultivated areas such as flower beds, land, vegetable gardens, they are melted by the rains and heated by the sun, which causes the seeds to sprout, helping to preserve the culture of biodiversity and give rise to flowers loved by pollinators.

The event, which began with the Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu, the anthem of the State of Tamil, was attended by more than 3,000 students from Auxilium College, highlighting community commitment to environmental protection. Two distinguished guests were also present: Ms. V.R. Subbulaxmi, Vellore District Commissioner and Dinesh Saravanan, an environmentalist who sponsored the seeds.

Dr. Isabella Rosaline S., coordinator of the Environmental Club, gave a welcome talk, greeting authorities, students, teachers, and participants and underlining the importance of the Eco 6G concept, which focuses on promoting an eco-friendly campus. The aim is to increase students’ sense of environmental responsibility.

The event was officially opened with the inaugural address by Sister Mary Josephine Rani A., Secretary of Auxilium College, who spoke about the vision behind Eco 6G and the importance of involving young people in the fight against climate change. Following this were the words of Dr. Arokia Jayaceli A., Director of Auxilium College, who praised the collaborative spirit of students and staff in organizing the SeedBall Fiesta, Underlining the College’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and environmental activism.

Mrs. Subbulaxmi, Vellore District Inspector, praised the commitment of Auxilium College to take proactive measures for environmental conservation. Her words encouraged students to continue to engage in green initiatives and actively contribute to a healthier planet.

The event concluded with thanks from Dr. Anitha T., assistant to the Department of Botany, to all officials, sponsors, participants, and volunteers for their valuable contribution in ensuring the success of the Mega SeedBall Fiesta 2024.

Seed balls are made from seeds of a variety of native trees, which play an essential role in promoting biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. Among the seeds used for the event were: Vepam (Neem), Yetti Kai (Indian Kino tree), Jathi Kai (nutmeg), Neer Maruthu (Indian elm), Arasamaram (Peepal tree), and Atthi (grapevine fig). These seeds were chosen for their ecological aspects, including air purification, soil conservation, and the ability to adapt to the local environment.

Through the Auxilium Eco 6G initiative, the College continues to inspire and stimulate young generations in a meaningful environmental commitment. The Mega SeedBall Fiesta 2024 not only highlighted the importance of reforestation, but also showed how community involvement can have a decisive impact on environmental protection.
